Literature-Based Character Development

Using literature, hands-on activities and the Promethean ActivBoard, students will learn what it takes to develop winning character on and off the field. These programs are designed to encourage students to draw conclusions about respect, identifying talents, honesty, trustworthiness, self-control and teamwork.

Students will actively investigate wise and unwise food choices by comparing foodsfrom the Food Pyramid with student lunch box and cafeteria choices. Using ACTIVote response devices, students will vote on their choices of healthy food, meals and snacks. Instant graphs will allow students and teachers to compare the results (greater than/less than, more/less, and equal to/not equal to) of their choices. They will measure the length of food’s journey through the body, use a body fat belt to discover the effect of too much weight on the skeletal system, and engage in interactive games such as “Swat That Food Group,” "Slow... Whoa... Go!,” and “I’m Running, I’m Walking, I’m Jumping, I’m Hopping.”

Balance and Motion
Science: K.3, 1.2, 2.2
Using familiar objects like tennis balls, baseballs, blocks and marbles, students will discover the concept of different kinds of motions (straight, circular, back/forth) and how pushes and pulls change motions. Students will experiment with magnets of various sizes and shapes and understand how the poles determine whether a magnet attracts or repels. They will be amazed to discover that even some foods can be magnetic!

Students will learn about the body’s amazing communication network, the five senses. They will discover the connection between the circulatory system and the brain. Students will be able to observe the reaction of the brain as it receives signals from the sensory organs: the eyes, ears, skin, nose, and tongue. Finally, they will measure their field of vision, “catch” sound, test sensitivity to touch, identify objects in odor boxes, and locate the taste buds on the tongue.

Play ball! Students will review SOL math skills as they take an imaginary trip to a Washington Nationals baseball game. Teachers will be able to immediately evaluate mastery of skills as students show their ability to choose the best calendar date, calculate the purchase of tickets, order food from Ernie the Hotdog Man, keep game stats, and much more using the ACTIVote. Students will discover that a fun day at the ballpark is loaded with many math decisions!
Language in Motion I
(Differentiated for grade-level appropriateness.)
English: K.1, K.2, K.3, K.4, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4
Students will put their minds and bodies in motion as they exercise, jump, bounce, wiggle and jiggle -- all the while improving their language skills. This interactive program gives language a new dimension as skills like rhyming and counting syllables move from the page to the floor. Reading and writing have never been so fun!
