Ricky Rudd’s Ford Taurus Takes Its Place As Part of the First Major Exhibit At the New Virginia Sports Hall of Fame

(Portsmouth, VA)  Using a crane, careful planning and teamwork, Ricky Rudd’s race car was lifted to the second floor of the new Virginia Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday, December 8 to take its place of honor as part of the first major exhibit installation at the new facility.

The car, driven by Rudd when he won the Brickyard 400 in 1997, will be the centerpiece of an interactive motor sports exhibit at the new Hall of Fame that will feature computer simulators allowing visitors to race against the computer or another guest on virtual courses modeled after Virginia raceways.

Established in 1972, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum has been proud to honor Virginia’s contributions to the world of sports as the Commonwealth’s official sports hall and museum.  In April of 2005, the Hall will open it’s new 35,000 square-foot facility in Portsmouth, featuring an updated Hall of Honor, computer databases, a dynamic digital theater, Campus Champions exhibits focused on Virginia’s colleges and universities, and the Game Time interactive hall with hands-on fun for the whole family. Besides the racing simulators, other interactive exhibits at the new Hall will feature baseball, football, basketball, soccer, health and fitness, and broadcasting.

Ricky Rudd started his racing career in go-karts at age nine and ran motocross throughout his teen years. The first time Ricky drove a stock car was at Rockingham, NC during practice for the spring race in 1975. He not only made the race, but finished 11th. In 1977, he ran 25 races, landing one top-five and ten top-tens. He finished 17th in points and was named Winston Cup Rookie of the Year.
